Murali Cheeroth is a contemporary artist whose practice spans painting, printmaking, digital media and performance. Born in Thrissur, Kerala, in 1966, he trained at the College of Fine Arts, Thrissur, and at Kala Bhavana, Santiniketan, where he completed his BFA and an MFA in Graphic Art. He later studied multimedia at C-DAC, Ahmedabad, and now lives and works in Bangalore.

A working artist

His work has been shown in India and abroad, including Emerging India at the Royal College of Art, London, Art Chicago, the Colombo Art Biennale, Art Gwangju and the Kerala Museum, Kochi. He received the State Lalit Kala Akademi Award and the Kanoria Scholarship for printmaking.

Mentor at Chitravathi

At the Chitravathi Center for Creativity, the art and design department of The Velammal International School, Chennai, Murali mentors the studio. Students learn from someone who makes and exhibits art himself, and the centre’s approach reflects that: art as a space to express, experiment and find out who you are.

From the next academic year, the centre will host an HCD Lab with HCD Institute, DIC Hub, IIT Hyderabad, bringing design thinking into the same studio.
