In 2020, India's National Education Policy did something no previous policy had done: it named design thinking — explicitly, by name — as a subject to be introduced in school curricula. Section 4.23 of NEP 2020 lists it alongside Artificial Intelligence and Environmental Education among the contemporary subjects that schools will be expected to offer, and the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (2023) carried that commitment into the structure of Indian schooling.
Six years on, the mandate is clear but the manual is missing. Most schools know they should teach design thinking. Very few have been told how. This guide — drawn from HCD Institute's fifteen years of building design thinking programmes for Indian schools, universities, and governments — is that manual.
What NEP 2020 Actually Asks of Schools
Strip away the commentary and the policy makes four demands that design thinking answers directly:
Experiential learning over rote memorisation. NEP 2020's central pedagogical shift is from content recall to learning by doing — projects, inquiry, discovery. A design cycle (research a real problem, frame it, prototype, test) is experiential learning with a spine.
