The HCD Lab: A Complete Design Thinking Curriculum, for Every Age in School

Ask most schools what "design thinking" looks like on their campus and you will hear about a workshop that happened once, or a room with a 3D printer that a few senior students use. Both are good things. Neither is a curriculum.
A curriculum is different. It is what turns a good intention into something every child experiences, in sequence, as they grow — the way mathematics or language does. NEP 2020 asks for exactly this: it names design thinking as a subject to be introduced "at relevant stages," which is policy language for build a progression, not a one-off.
The HCD Lab is that progression. It is a complete human-centred design curriculum running from Balvatika to Grade 12, built on HCD Institute's fifteen years of practice and delivered with teacher training and IIT Hyderabad Design Innovation Centre certification. This article walks through how it works — and why a curriculum, rather than a room, is the thing worth building.
One method, growing with the child
The strength of a K–12 curriculum is that a single idea deepens over twelve years instead of being taught once and forgotten. The HCD Lab runs one method — five simple movements — through every stage of school:
Immerse (observe real people), Frame (find the right problem), Imagine (generate many ideas), Build (prototype cheaply), and Test (learn from real users). A six-year-old does a playful version of the same cycle a seventeen-year-old does rigorously. The vocabulary grows; the method stays constant. By the time a student leaves school, the cycle is not a technique they were taught — it is how they think.
Stage by stage
Foundational (ages 3–8) — "The Curious Eye." The youngest children are already natural designers: endlessly curious, unafraid to make, unembarrassed to show unfinished work. This stage protects that. No frameworks, no jargon — observation games, empathy through story and role-play, building with blocks and clay, and the habit of asking "why" without fear. The aim is to keep creative confidence alive before schooling can quietly train it out.
Preparatory (Grades 3–5) — "Problems Belong to People." Here children learn the single most important idea in design: that a problem belongs to a person. They notice a real problem, picture the person who has it, imagine three solutions, build one from craft materials, and show it to the person it was made for. One complete cycle a term, woven into EVS, art, and language.
Middle (Grades 6–8) — "The Real Design Cycle." This is the heart of the HCD Lab, and where NEP 2020's mandate is fully met. Students now run complete cycles on real school and neighbourhood problems: interviewing real people, writing "How Might We" statements, prototyping in cardboard, and testing without explaining. This is also the stage where design thinking pairs naturally with an Atal Tinkering Lab — the method deciding what to make and whether it works, the tinkering lab providing the tools to make it.
Secondary (Grades 9–12) — "Design for the World." Senior students take on portfolio-grade projects: term- or year-long work with real community stakeholders, documented end to end. They learn journey mapping, systems thinking, and design for constraints like cost and accessibility. The output is a genuine design portfolio — an asset for UCEED, NID, and increasingly competency-focused university admissions — and, for many, the first clear sight of a career in design, engineering, or social innovation.
Why a curriculum beats a room
Schools are often sold a lab as a set of equipment. The HCD Lab inverts that. The most important assets are a curriculum with a spine, two trained teachers, and a rule that every cycle ends with students testing their work on real people. A converted classroom with movable furniture and a materials shelf runs a world-class programme; lakhs of equipment without a curriculum produces an impressive inauguration and then silence.
This is why teacher training sits at the centre of what we deliver. The facilitators do not need to be designers — they need to have run a full design cycle themselves before guiding one, and they need term-by-term guides so the work fits alongside their existing load. We train two teachers per school, never one, because programmes anchored to a single champion collapse when that teacher is transferred.
Assessment that fits NEP 2020
NEP 2020 moves evaluation from marks-for-memory toward competencies — and design projects produce exactly the evidence competency-based assessment needs. Rather than grading the prettiest prototype, the HCD Lab tracks the two numbers that honestly measure whether design thinking is happening: how many full cycles each class completed, and how many real people outside the classroom students actually spoke to. Alongside these sit reframes, portfolio growth, and rubrics for curiosity, empathy, collaboration, and iteration.
A return, not an import
It is worth saying plainly: this is not a foreign methodology bolted onto Indian schooling. NEP 2020's own "Head, Heart and Hands" philosophy consciously echoes Gandhi's Nai Talim and Tagore's Santiniketan — learning through making, community, and purpose. A school does not need to transform overnight.
