Taking the Baton: HCD Institute and the Next Chapter of Indian Innovation

On our 80th Independence Day, it is worth asking a question that India has been answering, quietly and brilliantly, for eight decades: what kind of country do we want to build, and who gets to build it? Freedom in 1947 was not only political. It was the freedom to imagine, to make, to solve our own problems in our own way. Eighty years on, that spirit of self-reliant, ingenious problem-solving is not a relic of the freedom struggle. It is the most valuable resource we have — and at HCD Institute, it is the inheritance we are humbled to carry forward.

This is a moment to remember the pioneers, to be honest about where India stands, and to be ambitious about what comes next. Because the story of modern Indian innovation is not finished. In many ways, its most important chapter is only beginning.

The arc of modern Indian innovation

If you step back far enough, the last seventy-five years reveal a clear and remarkable progression — not a series of disconnected achievements, but an evolution. Each generation of Indian institutions solved the problem the previous one made possible.

It began with design. In 1958, Charles and Ray Eames were invited by the Government of India to study the country's design needs, and the India Report they produced asked a deceptively simple question: what kind of design does a newly independent nation actually need? That question institutionalised itself in 1961 as the National Institute of Design. Through NID, India learned to think through design — to treat everyday objects, communication, and craft as serious instruments of nation-building.

Then came technology. The Indian Institutes of Technology built world-class scientific and engineering capability, and in doing so taught the country that it could compete with anyone on the hardest technical problems on earth. India learned to build.

Then came scale. With UPI and the wider India Stack, the country demonstrated something almost no other nation has: that you can design digital public infrastructure that works, elegantly and reliably, for 1.4 billion people. India learned to design systems at population scale — proof that Indian systems thinking could serve everyone, not just a few.

Seen together, the pattern is unmistakable:

Design → Technology → Scale → Human capability.

NID gave us design as a profession. The IITs gave us technology as a national capability. UPI proved we could build systems for hundreds of millions. And that leaves an obvious, thrilling next question — the one HCD Institute exists to answer.

From professional discipline to societal capability

NID essentially said: we need professional designers. The IITs said: we need world-class technologists. UPI showed: we can design for everyone.

HCD Institute's proposition is different, and larger: the ability to solve problems through human-centred design should not belong only to designers. It should belong to India.

Rooted in the design ecosystem around the Design Innovation Centre at IIT Hyderabad, HCD Institute works across exactly these layers at once — school design labs for students, executive immersions for senior leaders, specialist certifications, university-recognised diplomas, and pro-bono partnerships with government. The common thread is not a single course. It is a belief that human-centred thinking is a civic literacy, not a boutique skill.

There is a direct intellectual lineage here, and it is worth naming. The 1958 India Report led to NID; NID shaped Indian design education; that education matured into design thinking; design thinking met software and infrastructure to give us digital public goods; and the natural next phase is to make human-centred problem-solving a capability distributed throughout India's institutions. None of this would mean anything without the tradition it grows from. India's genius has never been to make the most expensive thing. Remember the pioneers. Sir M. Visvesvaraya, whose engineering turned scarce water into shared prosperity. Vikram Sarabhai and the founders of India's space programme, who insisted a poor country still had every right to reach for the stars — a conviction that decades later produced the Mars Orbiter Mission, which reached Mars on the first attempt at a fraction of the cost the world assumed was necessary. Dr. Verghese Kurien, whose cooperative model turned millions of small dairy farmers into the largest milk producer on the planet. Dr. M.S. Swaminathan, whose work helped a famine-prone nation feed itself. Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, who never stopped insisting that innovation and dignity belonged to every Indian child.

And remember the grassroots. Professor Anil Gupta and the Honey Bee Network, which took ordinary farmers and tinkerers seriously as inventors. Mansukhbhai Prajapati's clay refrigerator that needs no electricity. The Jaipur Foot, which gave mobility to people who could never have afforded a conventional prosthetic. Aravind Eye Care, which made world-class cataract surgery available at a scale and price the world came to study. None of these were acts of charity. They were acts of design — human-centred, resource-conscious, and unapologetically ambitious about who deserved to be included.

This is the baton. Frugal innovation and sustainability are not new goals we are adopting to fit a global mood; they are the oldest and most Indian way of making things. HCD Institute's job is to make that inheritance teachable, repeatable, and available to the next generation — to turn a national instinct into a shared method.

Sustainability is a design decision

Sustainability, in the end, is not something you bolt on at the finish. It is decided at the very beginning, in the framing of the problem. A product designed around what people actually need — rather than what a market can be persuaded to want — tends to use less, last longer, and waste far less. Human-centred design and sustainable design are the same discipline seen from two angles: both refuse to accept that the shortest path to profit is the only path worth taking.

When HCD Institute puts human-centred, universal, and sustainable design at the core of its teaching, it is making a quiet but radical claim: that designing well and designing responsibly are not in tension. AI is collapsing the cost of making things. Code, images, prototypes, plans, drafts — the raw production of stuff is becoming almost free. And when making becomes cheap, the scarce capability shifts. The valuable question is no longer can we build it? It is: what should we make? For whom? Why? Which problem actually matters? And what will this do to the people it touches?

Those are human-centred questions. They cannot be automated away, because they are questions of judgment, empathy, and values. In an age where anyone can generate a solution in seconds, the people and institutions who can frame the right problem — and foresee the human consequences of solving it — become the most important people in the room. HCD Institute's whole endeavour, combining human-centred method with AI-integrated practice across schools, executives, public policy, and product building, is aimed squarely at cultivating that judgment at scale.

Distributing the capability — the baton to the next generation

India spent its first seventy-five years building institutions of excellence. The task of the next phase is to distribute what those institutions learned. NID distributed design culture to designers. The IITs distributed scientific and technological capability. UPI showed how Indian systems could work for everyone. HCD Institute's ambition is to distribute human-centred problem-solving itself — arguably the most scalable inheritance of the four, because it multiplies every other one.

Imagine a generation of Indian engineers who instinctively start with the human before the specification. Doctors who design care around lived experience.
